Day of Horn History
SCMEA Day of Horn started as an outgrowth of the horn symposiums sponsored by the International Horn Society (see links below).
In 1971, a group of the world’s greatest horn players met in Tallahassee Florida and formed the IHS, declaring once and for all that the official name of our instrument is“horn”.History shows that our instrument is more closely related to the Roman cornu and the Danish luhrs then to any instrument specifically developed in France. Here is the actual record of that event:
The International Horn Society recommends that HORN be recognized as the correct English label for our instrument.
[From the Minutes of the First International Horn Society General Meeting,
June 15,1971, Tallahassee, Floriday, USA]
We have been fortunate to have the world’s greatest hornists as our artist/clinicians. Horn students of SuffolkCounty have benefited immeasurably from meeting and hearing these incredible musicians.Special thanks to Jeff Nelsen, Professor of Horn at Indiana University and hornist of the world renowned Canadian Brass, William Purvis, Principle Horn of Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Professor of Horn at Yale, Julliard and Stony Brook, R.J.Kelly, world renowned solo, ensemble and hand hornist and Adam Unsworth, Prof.of Horn at Univ.of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Philadelphia Orchestra and jazz artist extraordinaire for their participation in the first four events.
